:What Causes Water Retention Under my Eyes?
I am 47 years old and I have developed malar edema. It sits right above my cheekbones and will not go away. Should I find out if there is an underlying health condition before I go to a plastic surgeon and if so, what type of tests should be done? Thanks
:That is a good question and I would like to take this opportunity to give clarification to the said “water retention” under the eyes issue. Malar edema is more than just about water retention issues, this is in reality “orbital fat prolapse.” Orbital fat prolapse is characterized by a movable mass under the conjunctiva. It is often linked with localized thinning or weakness of the Tenon’s capsule. This phenomenon may be brought about by surgical trauma or by natural means such as aging. This may be resolved via blepharoplasty or autologous fat transfer, but some improvement may also be seen through a non-surgical approach of using fillers. Under the right and skillful hands of an experienced injector, this should be resolved effectively.

That said, it would be helpful if you seek in-person consultation with your board certified plastic surgeon so he or she could assess the malar edema. From here on, he or she will be able to analyze and develop a treatment plan to resolve it. Best of luck!
