What are Botox Injections?

A Botox injection is an injectable made from bacterium Clostridium botulinum, a toxin. This is the same toxin that causes food poisoning like botulism. Though it is harmful if ingested, in small doses it is a useful tool for cosmetic treatment. Doctors have found that using it properly and in small dosages allows it to treat issues that include minimizing wrinkles and improving the overall facial appearance.  Experience Botox Santa Barbara by scheduling a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon.

What is a Botox Lip Flip?

The Botox lip flip is fairly quick cosmetic procedure performed in the office.  The entire process takes about fifteen to twenty minutes.  Dr. Sheffield will inject Botox into the corners of your mouth and the Cupid’s bow area of the upper lip.

By using Botox, Dr. Sheffield will relax the muscles around the lip area.  The process results in flipping your upper lip upward and outward creating much fuller looking lips.  One of the main benefits of the Botox lip flip is that is does not involve dermal fillers.  The lip flip procedure created the appearance of fuller lips by the flipping of the upper lip whereas fillers acutally increase the fullness through filler injection.

What is a Botox injection used for?

A Botox injection is used for a variety of different things. Your Santa Barbara plastic surgeon can discuss with you the main uses as pertaining to your specific case. In general, though, these are the areas it is most commonly used for:

  • Frown Lines. These are the lines that appear between your eyebrows and above your nose. They can be highly pronounced because people use them a lot when talking. This puts stress on the tissue and forms wrinkles in the area. Botox for frown lines is one of the primary non-surgical approaches of reducing the expression of tension or anger. Even just a slight reduction in the noticeability of the frown lines between the eyebrows will create a more refreshed and positive outward appearance.

Botox before and after crows feet

  • Lines around the eyes, or crow’s feet. These are common with aging. They are the small lines that extend out from the outer corners of your eyes. These appear as a natural result of smiling or squinting.  When injectiing Botox in the crow’s feet, the amount typically ranges 5-20 units for women and 15 – 30 units for men. At SB Aesthetics, we take a natural approach to facial rejuvenation in the eye region.  It’s important to still have a natural look in line with the aging process and expression while at the same time restoring the youthfulness. Botox will help the crow’s feet by reducing the wrinkles and creases and help prevent them from becoming worse over time. Always use an experienced plastic surgeon in order to ensure the best results.

  • Horizontal forehead lines. This is another result of facial movements. If you’re a chronic brow furrower than this is likely an unwanted result. Botox can treat this area by relaxing it.  The benefits Botox injections in the forehead lines, of 11’s lines, can significantly increase self-esteem and restore youthfulness. When perform by an aesthetic plastic surgeon, Botox can gently reduce dynamic 11’s lines thereby relaxing the muscles which create the lines. This will result in a fresher more youthful look. Using Botox for forehead lines can help with the aging process and decrease the
overall impact aging can have over time.

Bunny lines Botox before and after

  • Bunny lines or squint lines. If you scrunch your face a lot when talking, then this can produce squint and scrunch lines around your nasal area.  Bunny lines are wrinkles or creases that can be seen at the side and upper part of the nose evident when we smile.  A simple and non-surgical solution is Botox injections. Static wrinkles are caused by the gradual
breakdown of skin elasticity over time. By relaxing the nasalis muscle with Botox injections, the appearance of these
    wrinkles can be dramatically reduced.

  • Lines on neck. Your neck also can be a casualty of aging. It is common for lines to develop around the neck horizontally. Botox is a tool that can be used to minimize these lines.  Sun damage, the decrease of collagen and elastin, in addition to the decreasing in strength of the underlying platysma muscle can cause horizontal neck lines which are also known as the necklace lines. Botox injections to this area are used above and below and along the length of the lines. It is common practice to be conservative for neck line injections so as to not affect the patient’s ability to swallow so the injections are given in multiple applications.

  • Lip Lines. A Botox injection can help reduce the vertical lines of the upper lip also known as smoker’s lines.  Not many units are needed, but if too much is used, lip movement may be affected.  Botox is effective at minimizing these lines. Vertical lip lines are generally a result of the regular and continuous lip movements of daily life. Often known as smoker’s lines, are a result of long term smoking and caused by the harmful effects of smoking but also from the repeated pressing and pursing of the lips together.

When to consider Botox Injections?

The Botulinum Toxin, or Botox injection, should be considered when you see:

  • Intense lines showing up between your eyes make you look tired, sad, angry, or upset.
  • Various facial expressions that create wrinkles around your eye areas and on your forehead.
  • Asymmetry with your eyebrows, or within your entire face, botulinum toxincan help to correct it by relaxing the muscles
  • Suffering from chronic migraines.

You should find a Board Certified Santa Barbara Plastic Surgeon to discuss your specific case with.

Are you an appropriate candidate for Botox Santa Barbara CA?

One important question to consider prior to a Botox injection treatment is whether or not you are a good candidate. You can discuss Botox Santa Barbara further and in depth with your plastic surgeon in Santa Barbara, but here are some tips to knowing you’re doing the right thing.

  1. You should need the treatment. If you suffer from any of the above symptoms then you are a good candidate for at least a consultation. Your surgeon can discuss with you the options that are available and what he or she can do to help you look younger.
  2. Remember to be realistic with your expectations. Some Santa Barbara plastic surgeons have technology that allows you to see before and after pictures of your face. They will upload your current picture and manipulate it using software. This shows you what you potentially will look like post-treatment. Of course it isn’t always 100% accurate, but it will give you a good idea of what the results will turn out like.
  3. You must be relatively healthy for procedures to be scheduled. If you have any infections or illnesses your doctor likely will not recommend treatment or postpone it. Always disclose your complete medical history and medication list to your doctor. This includes any herbal supplements you take.

Finally, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding your surgeon will not perform the injections. This is an instance where likely you will be asked to postpone your treatment.

How is a Botox procedure performed?

Injecting botulinum toxin is a simple procedure. Here is where you want to do your due diligence with picking the right surgeon. You want someone who is experienced and knowledgeable. Having said that, your procedure likely won’t take very long. This of course depends on the number of units being used, desired effect, intensity of the treatment, etc. In general though, it should take just a few minutes to inject the Botox, or botulinum toxin.

Your plastic surgeon  will prepare you for the treatment by giving you instructions. You may have to temporarily discontinue medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. When you arrive at the office and are ready for treatment, you may ask for a topical anesthetic to lessen the discomfort of the needles. Remember though that they are very small and usually are minimally uncomfortable.

A good plastic surgeon will let you know what to expect the minute you decide to move forward with the procedure. Be sure to discuss any requirements you need to manage pre-treatment.

What are my Botox options?

There are many configurations of botulinum toxin, or Botox, and a portion of them are useful for cosmetic purposes. Here is a list of some medical and cosmetic conditions that this toxin can be helpful in treating:

  • Facial asymmetry
  • Muscle spasticity
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Eyelid spasms
  • Crossed or lazy eyes
  • Chronic migraines
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Movement disorders
  • Excessive sweating

Select a plastic surgeon in Santa Barbara you can trust

By far the most important thing to do when considering Botox injections is find the right surgeon you can trust. Technically any doctor can perform the injections. There is nothing illegal about any doctor doing it. The question though is do you want someone without experience in the specific procedure you need to inject you?

Finding the right Santa Barbara plastic surgeon is critical to getting the safe and effective results you want. Ask family, friends and coworkers if they know of any reputable plastic surgeons. They can start you on the quest to finding the perfect provider. You also can look online to find surgeons in your areas. You should schedule initial consultations with at least three surgeons to discuss your needs.

Prior to your consultation, make a list of all of your concerns. From the small wrinkles you want addressed to after-care, you should include everything you want to know. Getting answers from your potential plastic surgeon is important but it also is a great way to gauge how well you get alone with the surgeon and his or her office staff. You are hiring the entire team to manage your progress, so you want everyone to be friendly and helpful.

Though this is obvious, many people discount it. Always check to be sure that your surgeon is a Board Certified plastic surgeon in Santa Barbara. You also want to be sure that they are experienced in the types of services you need. For example, if you have heavy lines around your eyes, ask for people who had their eyes done by the surgeon. He or she should be able to provide you with before-after pictures of different clients to ensure you that they know how to manage the issue.

BEST BOTOX AND FILLERS IN SANTA BARBARA

Botox and fillers can be used together because they address different aspects of aging. Dr. Sheffield recommends their use in tandem, this combination approach can remove years from your face. More and more people are realizing the benefits of combining Botox with dermal fillers, which is why the trend is picking up steam.

BABY BOTOX SANTA BARBARA

For the past two decades, Botox has been the most popular cosmetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons.

When we talk about “baby Botox,” we’re really talking about “micro-Botox,” which is a new term for injectable Botox.

Like traditional Botox, Baby Botox is designed to plump up your face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Baby Botox, on the other hand, utilizes a smaller volume of the original Botox injectable.

The goal of baby Botox is to give the appearance of a smoother, younger face without the “frozen” or “plastic” appearance that can be caused by traditional Botox.

The ideal candidate is in good health, has never had a reaction to botulism toxin, and has no history of high blood pressure, hepatitis, or any other type of bleeding disorder.

Questions to ask your Botox Specialist in Santa Barbara

If you are considering an aesthetic plastic surgeon then here are five important questions to ask:

  1. Are you board certified?
  2. What type of anesthesia do you use and who will administer it?
  3. How many times have you done this procedure in the past?
  4. What is the total breakdown of cost for the treatment?
  5. What is recovery like? (Including a general timeline)

How long will the results from a Botox injection last?

Your plastic surgeon will discuss the lasting effects of your treatment. On average though, a Botox injection lasts up to three months. Some patients however report it lasting up to 6 months. As your muscle’s movement returns, you will begin to see a reappearance of wrinkles. This is how you know that retreatment is required.

How long does a Botox injection take to work?

You likely will start to see results at around 4-days post-treatment. It can take up to 14 days to see the full results though.

Does the Santa Barbara Botox hurt?

The cosmetic surgeon you work with will use a very tiny needle to inject botulinum toxin. You may feel a slight pinch but most patients report it is minimal. In addition, it lasts such a short period of time that few patients complain.

How much does Botox Santa Barbara cost?

Before you get Botox injections you should understand the cost and definitely make sure  you get not only what you are paying for.  There are varying factors that determine the cost of Botox which are the amount needed, sex of the person (men require more per area), the city you live in and the quality of the doctor making the injections.  You want to make sure you are getting you Botox done by a board certified plastic surgeon who is trained in aesthetic plastic surgery rather than a nurse, a med spa or a PA who is not.  The Plastic surgeons charge for Botox injections in one of two ways:

Cost per unit. This is generally the preferred way to pay for Botox as a patient simply because it’s very clear as to what your’e getting in return. The manufacturer of Botox cosmetic, Allergan, sells Botox in units of 50, 100 and 200 vial bottles. The average cost of Botox can range anywhere between $12 to $20 per unit, depending on your geographic location. To understand more specifically, the average person requires approximately 20-25 units to treat forehead lines, and between 5-10 units for injections in the crow’s feet area around the outside of the eyes. The 11’s lines or frown lines between the eyes is typically a deeper line and thus can require up to 25 units or more.  If crow’s feet, forehead and frown lines all needed treatment the cost in Santa Barbara performed by a plastic surgeon could cost anywhere between $700 to $900, depending on the number of units.   Also, since you are buying a bottle make sure the Botox vial if brand new.

Cost per area. To define this means that the plastic surgeon in Santa Barbara could charge anywhere from $300 to $600 for each of the treatment areas injected. However, if the forehead lines are injected the cost could end up being higher as there are multiple areas within the horizontal forehead lines. In another example, if the 11’s lines and the crow’s feet were injected and my doctor charged $500 per area, the cost of the Botox injections could be around $500. To be fair, just because a plastic surgeon mat choose this pricing structure doesn’t mean they aren’t the most qualified aesthetic surgeon, but it tends to seem the cost ends up being higher than what is needed. Also, beware that the risk could increase with this pricing model because you are not necessarily buying your very own vial of Botox and the possibility of contamination could exist.

Limitations and risks of botulinum toxin injections

A Botox is a great solution to minimizing wrinkles. As with any injectable though, there can be some risks and limitations to consider. Usually the only side-effect is minimal swelling, redness and bruising in the areas where injections were targeted. This should be minor. If you experience anything more than minimal pain or discomfort, contact your surgeon.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, your surgeon will postpone treatment. When you disclose your full medical history he or she will work with you to discuss whether or not you are a true candidate for treatment. Your doctor will consider your full medical history to note whether or not you are safe for the procedure.

In extreme cases, people have reported trouble with speech, vision issues and muscle weakness throughout the body. These are not common and if you do experience anything like this contact your doctor immediately or get immediate medical assistance.

It has medical uses that move away from aesthetics and focus on the patient’s well-being, such as in cases of involuntary muscle hyperhidrosis. But do not forget that there are also possible side effects and that most of them are caused by abusing Botox and misusing this toxin.

In this sense, the application of Botox is extremely delicate, and its use is not recommended in the lower area of the face or people with less than 20 years or more than 65. Also, it should only be done by a plastic surgeon who possess the precise knowledge, both of the doses and the necessary instruments, as of the human anatomy. If Botox is administered by an unprofessional, it will likely result in severe side-effects. So, you must ensure that an expert does it

Side Effects of Santa Barbara Botox Injections

Some of the negative effects that can be derived from malpractice are an allergy to the toxin which can cause difficulty breathing or hives. Also, depending on the area the following cases can occur: if the Botox is injected into the face it can cause headaches, nausea, and inflammation in the area where it has been applied, facial paralysis, drooping of the eyelids, damage to the cornea, constant tearing or otherwise, dry eye syndrome.

If the botulinum toxin is applied in the neck, you can notice a loss of sensitivity in the skin of the area, difficulty swallowing cough, irritation of the throat or rhinitis. If it is used to treat bladder problems, problems with constipation, sleep disturbance, tiredness, and pain when urinating after the injection may arise.

Botox Injection Q&A Discussion

How many botulinum toxin units for 11’s or frown lines?

On average cosmetic surgeons use 15-25 units of botulinum toxin for frown lines and 11’s. This can be variable though dependent on the thickness of skin and the size of muscles. If the muscles are particularly hefty, the surgeon may increase units up to 25-30.

What areas of the face can botulinum toxin be injected?

Botox injections can be effectively used throughout the face, including the forehead, brows, eye area, crow’s feet and on the lips. It also can be used for the chin. A Botox injection is incredibly useful and with the right plastic surgeon possessing expertise, it can make your skin look much smoother.

How can I avoid Botox injection side effects?

To avoid Botox injection side effects you should follow your surgeon’s post-treatment directions implicitly. The best tool you have though is to do your pre-treatment searching for the right plastic surgeon. Take as much time as you need to find someone who has the expertise you need and the patient-care mannerisms that you are comfortable with. The quality of the ending results though are going to depend on what techniques your surgeon uses. For example, the direction of injection, the anatomical areas treated and the dilution of saline to Botox can all effect the results. Drooping of the eyelid, or ptosis, is not common but it can occur—reportedly in about 1-2% of patients. It is temporary and your surgeon can give you specially formulated eye drops to assist with the issue.

What is a Botox lift or Botox injection brow lift?

Strong muscles are positioned in the brow area. They can drag down the face to give a look of frowning or being disgruntled when you aren’t. A botulinum toxin brow lift can assist with this issue. A skilled Santa Barbara cosmetic surgeon can administer the proper amount to pull down those strong muscles, giving the brows a look of “lifting”. In general it is common to see 2 millimeters of lifted area post treatment.

Can you exercise after a Botox injection or will it decrease the results?

In general strenuous exercise is not recommended for one week post-treatment. After that though usually it is fine to exercise. There can be some long lasting effects though of botulinum toxin type a.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Botox is an official brand name used for a neuromodulator known as Botulinum Toxin Type A. It’s an injectable cosmetic procedure that is used to treat wrinkles and fine lines that pop up on one’s face with increasing age. ‘Toxin’ here should not be misunderstood as something poisonous or harmful - Botox is actually safe for usage in humans (the FDA approved it back in 1989). It’s completely safe as long as it’s administered by a competent medical professional. Xeomin and Dysport are a few other brand names that use the same product.
This is dependent on various factors, including: • Your medical history • Your history of Botox treatments • The degree of facial muscle movement • Your aesthetic goals from the procedure • The kind of wrinkles you’re looking to eliminate
This treatment is generally used to eliminate wrinkles and lines on numerous facial areas, including lip lines, the forehead, and crow’s feet. It can also be used to soften dimpled chins and treat other conditions. It is often injected into jaw muscles to treat teeth grinding issues, TMJ, or to slim down the jaws. There are a few other off-label uses for Botox as well.
To put it in layman’s terms, when Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals emanating from the region, causing it to relax temporarily. Relaxed muscles cause dynamic wrinkles occurring due to muscle movements to soften, disappear, or dissipate eventually.
Patients who have been administered excessive Botox often report having an expressionless or ‘frozen’ face. However, this is not a concern for patients treated by Dr. Robert W. Sheffield – a veritable genius and respected plastic surgeon who will ensure that your face looks completely normal. Well, you will have a more youthful appearance – we can assure you that!
Worry not – a Botox treatment can be completed very quickly with minimal pain and discomfort. There’s no recovery time or anesthesia requirements for this treatment. Most people generally get their treatments done during their afternoon break and return to their offices immediately after the treatment without any issues.
You can expect the results to last for three to five months after the injection. Your body will metabolize the injected Botox over time, causing your muscles to return to their former state. If you’d like to maintain your results for a longer period, you can book periodic maintenance procedures every three to four months to maintain your appearance.
Many patients are hesitant to try out Botox for fear of being too old or too young for it. We assure you that it’s not the case at all! All patients are required to undergo an evaluation by a qualified medical professional before commencing their treatment. These days, millennials are turning to Botox in their 20s when their wrinkles or lines start showing up first – it’s a useful preventative measure that works!
Botox was approved for use by the FDA over three decades ago to treat wrinkles and lines and is completely safe to use. However, patients with certain neurological conditions, breastfeeding mothers, and pregnant women are advised against receiving Botox injections.
Your doctor will ask you to stop drinking alcohol or using supplements or medications that have blood-thinning properties such as Ginseng, Gingko Biloba, Ibuprofen, or Aspirin. This will prevent bruising issues after the treatment and minimize potential complications.
Botox treatments have a few side effects, such as tenderness near the site of the injection, redness, swelling, or bruising. However, all these issues will resolve themselves within a week at most without the need for any medical intervention.
