Dermal Fillers Santa Barbara
Dr. Sheffield is a prominent Santa Barbara plastic surgeon who specializes in injectable fillers and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Some of our patients have brought forth interesting and detailed questions about dermal fillers, otherwise known as cosmetic fillers of facial fillers.
: How Do I Get Rid of Wrinkle Filler if I Don’t Like the Results?
I read that injectables can be extracted from the skin if you don’t like the results. How is this possible? Laverné from Indianapolis, IN
: That is a good question. Yes, it is possible to remove some fillers once they are already injected in your face. Dermal fillers that have hyaluronic acid base such as Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Teosyal can be removed by dissolving them using an enzyme called Hyaluronidase. This is the reason why many patients and doctors use hyaluronic acid dermal fillers – they are very easy to dissolve should there be an issue or if the patient is not satisfied with the result. On the other hand, permanent fillers like collagen filler, can be removed by excising them surgically. Other fillers like Radiesse, Artefill, and Sculptra do not contain hyaluronic acid. They are composed of various substances making the reversal quite difficult and challenging to perform. Extracting the fillers would be the only option available for these fillers. Unfortunately, even with the option to extract, success is still not guaranteed, as extraction may sometimes not work out well.

I would highly recommend a thorough discussing with your board certified plastic surgeon prior to getting a filler treatment. Discuss your options and open up the possibility of getting a reversal in case you are unhappy with the result. Best of luck!
