MICRODERMABRASION SANTA BARBARA

Microdermabrasion Santa Barbara – Facial Rejuvenation

Microdermabrasion functions as a form of skin rejuvenation. It is a minimally-invasive aesthetic skin resurfacing procedure designed to restore and renew the tone and texture of the skin.  It is typically used as an exfoliation method. Patients utilize microdermabrasion for the treatment of light scars, skin discoloration, stretch marks, and sun damages.  It can also significantly improve the appearance of the skin in cases of moderate sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and additional skin-related problems or concerns.  A minimally abrasive instrument is used for the treatment. The procedure utilizes a special applicator in order to abrasively and gently sand down the skin to remove the uneven outer layer thereby causing the skin to rejuvenate.  The skin is gently sanded so that the uneven outer layer is removed.

Who Are The Best Candidates?

The best candidates for the procedure are otherwise healthy adults who are experiencing skin conditions and imperfections that are relatively minor. Realistic expectations about the procedure are also necessary.  Patients who are not good candidates for the procedure are those who may have active rosacea, open sores, warts, active acne, and others. Always
contact your physician if there are questions or concerns.

What About The contraindications?

If the candidate falls under the following contraindications categories, he/she should not receive this form of treatment:

  • Isotretinoin usage within 6 months of treatment, which creates potential hypertrophic scarring;
  • Facial surgery within the past 60 days;
  • Radiation therapy to the head;
  • Hypertrophic scarring anywhere on the patient’s body; and,
  • Any viral or bacterial infections that affect the patient’s skin-such as flat warts, herpes simplex or impetigo (systemic therapy must be used to control these issues prior to the procedure)

What is the pain level on a scale of 1 to 10?

The pain is ranked at 1 and is easy to tolerate. Patients experience mild tingling sensations and no serious pain is reported by past patients.

How Long Will The Treatment Take?

Treatments last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and patients often refer to them as “lunch hour facials”.  No recovery period or downtime takes place following microdermabrasion.

How Long Will Results Last?

Patients should see immediate improvements to their complexion once they have received a single treatment. In order to enjoy lasting results, a patient must schedule a series of sessions that will be performed over the course of a few weeks.

Who Is Able To safely administer These treatments?

Patients must be schooled in the differences between microdermabrasion and dermabrasion. Dermabrasion should not be performed unless a physician is present to supervise and medical professionals are responsible for the treatment. As for microdermabrasion, this technique is more superficial and can be performed by medical spa professionals and estheticians. Be sure to check with your nursing board, local medical board or health care attorney for additional information.

What Other Concerns Do I Need To Know About?

Any discomfort that patients experience as a result of this procedure is typically short-lived. Swelling and redness may take place, but these symptoms should subside within a few hours. The skin can also be dry and flaky for the first few days. Bruising can occur because of the suction but will subside quickly as well. Sun exposure is also problematic and patients must use sunscreen if they are going to be exposed to the elements, post-procedure.

What else do I need to know?

Those with darker skin must take special care. Less intensive lasers must be used in order to avoid skin damage. Any patient who uses spray tan or a tanning booth should avoid such treatments, as they can cause damage to the skin.
