What is botox made of?
Anti-wrinkle medication Botox is derived from a bacterial toxin called clostridium botulinum toxin. This poison is the same toxin responsible for botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
Botox injections can temporarily reduce muscle activity or even prevent movement by blocking nerve impulses. Depending on the condition being treated, the results can last anywhere from three to a year. Pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site are the most often reported adverse effects. Headache, nausea, and an upset stomach are among possible side effects. Eyelid drooping is a transient side effect of several facial injections. What is the main ingredient of Botox?
Botox’s generic name in the scientific community is onabotulinumtoxinA. Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces seven distinct types of botulinum toxin, one of which is called onabotulinumtoxinA. The botulinum toxin is commonly known by its commercial name, Botox.
As stated by Dr. Sheffield, Botox is a prescription medicine that “contains extremely minute amounts of the highly pure botulinum toxin protein taken from the bacteria.” In 1895, scientists made the initial discovery of this bacteria.
In his own words, “the raw material for BOTOX is generated by culturing the bacteria and sifting it to remove bacterial components, leaving the pure neurotoxic complex,” which is what Dr. Sheffield uses to describe the process of creating Botox.
We learned from Dr. Sheffield that “less than one gram of the refined toxin is adequate to manufacture the world’s supply of Botox and Botox Cosmetic for a whole year.” This is because “it starts with the pure raw material botulinum neurotoxin type A.” Dr. Sheffield was kind enough to explain the procedure to us, despite the fact that it is a well guarded secret at Botox Cosmetic.
How plausible is that? Very small amounts are injected intramuscularly or intradermally into the desired region, depending on the indication. This causes the targeted glands or muscles to temporarily produce less activity. To achieve the cosmetic effect of diminished wrinkles and fine lines, the targeted muscles are first relaxed.
